The theme of the work is "failure by way of perfection." Everything works exactly as it is supposed to work, which is exactly why it fails. A tragedy is supposed to teach a lesson, as opposed to entertaining you like a comedy, or exciting you like a drama. The story of Orathus, who wins a lottery for an Earthly Eden, is a tale of double tragedy, for not only does Eden fail of its own accord, but Orathus too finds his only end to be ruin. When his pal Pratus is asked to "return the favor," Pratus does indeed answer his friend's request, etching the tragedy in stone. (Originally Published in 1975 and Was a Regional Bestseller) |
