FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions | Back to the Top

1. Can I search all files on my computer? If you want to search the entire hard drive on your computer, you can. You must enable the Microsoft Indexing Service on your Windows XP Platform. Instructions for how to do this are included in JVP-Voyager. To search the entire hard drive requires an index of such files, and this index is provided in the Windows XP Platform. It is already installed on your computer as a component, but it may not be enabled by the system. Instructions are provided for how to do this. If you use "Focused Search" capability, some files cannot be read, because the scanning of the files takes place on-the-fly. 2. Why do you have separate buttons for separate searches? It is the most efficient way to search without getting irrelevant files in your searches. The aim of JVP-Voyager is to have a "Focused Search." Search a Single Folder "by Filename or Content" Using "Content String" pattern Search 4 Levels Deep "by Filename or Content" Using "Content String" pattern Search 4 Levels Deep "by Content" Using "1, 2 or 3 Separate Keywords" A "content string" is a pattern of words or letters always kept intact, so that the word "analytic" also finds "analytical" and "analytically." But, a "keyword" search for "analytic" will find ONLY "analytic." 3. What is the real purpose of a folder search? Focused search can take 2 directions, that of 1 folder, or that of several folders. If you have a lot of files in 1 folder, you need to search only that 1 folder, not your entire hard drive. 4. What is the advantage of recursive search? Recursive search scans the contents of all files 4 levels deep from your chosen target. This means that, no matter how many files or folders are included within that particular pathway, all files will be scanned. You should be careful not to search "My Documents" as a large folder, since the desktop search would be better to search the "My Documents" folder. However, for any area of 4 folders depth, the recursive search is much better than a desktop search, since you will not get irrelevant files in the process. 5. Why do you limit the recursive search to 4 folders? JVP-Voyager actually reads every file it is capable of reading. It does not use an index, and therefore it can search any folder at any time, without any indexing service. However, reading the files to the end takes much longer than using an index, so 4 folders is about the maximum amount. If you have 4 very large folders, the recursive search for content might take 20 - 30 seconds, because it reads every file. If you search by filename, however, it is almost instantly completed in a very short time, 2 - 3 seconds. 6. Must I always choose filename or content type search? If you are using the Folder Search or the Recursive Search, you must choose whether it is a filename search or a content search. Desktop search does not require any choice. If you use a Keyword Search, the search is automatically for content based on your keywords. 7. What is the difference between searching for a "Content String" or "Keyword?" The phrase "of the people" is a pattern of letters. In "content string" that pattern will not be disturbed, and the search will always look for those 3 words together as a single phrase, a single pattern of letters. However, in a "keyword" search, each individual word is searched for separately: "of", "the", "people." In a "keyword" search, "John Mary" is the same as "Mary John." The order of words is irrelevant. 8. What is a special search? The Special Search allows you to make 2 entries. The first entry is the search string, and the second entry is the date the file was created. Matching files will be found. If you type in rtf 2005 all files from 2005 will be found if they have rtf in the filename using "Filename and Year" Search. If you type in Mary 2005 all files will be found if they contain the word "Mary" in the text using "Keyword and Year" Search. In "Filename and Year" Search, you seek a "content string" as a portion of a filename, but in "Keyword and Year" Search, you seek a "keyword" as a single word in the file. 9. What files will JVP-Voyager scan in a content search? Files which the Windows XP Platform can read are typically okay, with some exceptions, such as the .wps (Microsoft Works Word Processor), and the .pdf (Adobe). You can, if you wish, convert or save your .wps files to .rtf. The WordPad (.rtf) files are always read cleanly. If you use Full Desktop Search, you can scan .pdf and other files which have been indexed. 10. What files will JVP-Voyager scan in a filename search? All files may be scanned in a filename search, because there is no problem in reading a filename, unless it has an illegal character in it, such as the apostrophe or the colon. You can even open images in the browser window, if you like. In other words, any file can be searched by filename --- text, images, media, whatever. If you know the filename of a .wps or a .pdf, you can find those too, but they cannot be scanned in a content search. 11. Can JVP-Voyager open a .wps or a .pdf file? Yes. Opening any file is possible on the Windows XP Platform, if Windows can open it. If you find the file by way of filename search, you can open it. It will be opened by the default program associated with it. 12. Is this really free? Yes, the "Free Final BETA Release" is indeed free. You can download it without worry, but the License is still the same regarding usage, with the exception of price. A future version as a full release will be commercial, but the current version on this web page is free. 13. After a future full release, will this still be free? Yes. Once you download the "Free Final BETA Release" you can use it forever free of charge. It would be silly to think you'd owe anything after I let you download it. Downloading the free version means you get to use it for free forever, but you do not gain any rights to it, and you do not have rights to give it away or to re-distribute it. |
