Proofreading entails many things. In the simplest terms it is checking for spelling, but proofreading also means punctuation and format, as well as checking for words which are spelled correctly, but inappropriate. For example, the word "then" may be intended, but the word "the" is accidentally used instead. Proofreading by checking only the spelling will not pick up the error.

Additionally, grammar plays a large part, sometimes just in shuffling the words in a simple sentence. For example, the word "only" is often used improperly as a qualifier. Where it is placed in a sentence changes the meaning.

1. I want software coded only in C#.
2. I want only software coded in C#.
3. I only want software coded in C#.

All 3 sentences are different.

Ultimately, however, you must choose between proofreading, which would catch the errors just discussed, and editing, which would entail additional corrections in the text, including re-writing certain portions.
