WRITING IN GENERAL

I have been writing since about 1970, and my writing includes a broad spectrum of experience and research. I never go into anything halfway. In fiction, I published one novel in 1975, but I have written thirteen more, all in different categories. I am like that in just about everything I do. In music, for example, I have written in every style, genre and form, from symphonies to ballads, from classical to ragtime. The more one can attempt, the better off one is. That is the way I feel. So, my writing covers as much as I could have gotten into during those years since 1970. That takes some research too, most of the time.

Take my Western screenplay, "The Western Heart," for an example. I spent more than three years researching the Old West for that, from 1982 to 1985, when I finally finished the script. You could not write my screenplay without first having done the research that I did, because I used so many genuine facts in the script itself. The story, which is the motion picture, is pure fiction, something that I made up. But, it reads like a true story, because the research was so well done. I have about fifteen movies to produce, and if you add the stage plays, the opera, and the ballet for adaptations, I have more than two dozen movies to produce in my trunk.

I do not write much fiction anymore, however, because there are only so many stories one person can write. Today, I am primarily a nonfiction writer. I write science and sports, and I had a column in 2004 called SOLUTIONS, where I brought an original solution to some problem in America. The trademark I live by is "Creativity and Problem Solving."
